On Unpaved Roads
16:22 <RefMankey>: Fresh air. Grass, which loves to grow long around (and sometimes on) dirt pathways, resisted the gust's oppression. A laborer tends to his yard, using his shears to ensure the bushes don't grow too thick. Near some living quarters, two middle-aged women discussed property values and their, "grandsons' prospects."
16:25 <RefMankey>: By far the largest building among those in New Bark Town was the Town Lab. Its plaque honored its "head Professor Elm" very generously. Through glass windows, one could all sorts of scientific progresses.
16:26 <cynda1>: 'Wonder what they're talking about.' Saiki, a nineteen year old really late in the game of Pokemon Trainer asked as she neared New Bark Town. Trying to keep her focus on the road, the curious woman couldn't help but glance at the two gossiping women.
16:27 <cynda1>: Luckily for them, however, the lab in the core of the town grabbed her attention even more, what with all the scientists busily trying to gather their various objects needed. This was where she was getting her first Pokemon?
16:31 <RefMankey>: Apparently so. Its creme-and-cyan coloration didn't stand out, but the tasks that went on in that building did; just from what was visible that laboratory held a doctor and patient, a man taming rare Pokemon, and a generous number of plants. All this, and not one person stood watch over the laboratory's doors. "Everyone's welcome," was this building's tagline.
16:36 <RefMankey>: The heavy machinery didn't run heavily here - that was for another room - but this entrance was still a rather busy one. Receptionists, dressed in dull, silvery uniforms, handled no shortage of papers. Chairs lined the areas around those desks, and several wooden doors led to various areas. One for future Trainers, one for patients, a few for employees;
16:38 <cynda1>: Saiki glanced from side to side as her footsteps barely seemed to make a sound at the busily moving scientist and employees of all sorts. This was by far not the loudest room, but it was still loud enough to muffle Saiki's confidence just a teeny tiny bit.
16:39 <cynda1>: But of course, it was a rather small amount of confidence, as all it took was a calming sigh for her to maneuver past any employee to try and look for the head of the lab.
16:40 <RefMankey>: there was something for everyone here. If not, at least they could admire the relaxed, white tile and palm trees. Well, that or the other person in the room: a young boy waddled in his chair, loudly flipping through an assortment of paper and knowledge. He wore a Pokeball insigna on his shir; here, it just about shone.
16:44 <cynda1>: Approaching the boy with the pokeball picture on his shirt, Saiki thought it would be a good idea to ask. "Hey, can you tell me who's in charge of this lab? I'm here for my first Pokemon."
16:48 <RefMankey>: "..." The boy didn't respond at first, but with Saiki's question he, without even looking at the girl, responded: "Professor Elm founded the lab and still runs the place today. He's not very busy, but if you'd like to file an appointment, just meet with the receptionist over there." He pointed - briefly. "Shouldn't take you ten minutes."
16:51 <cynda1>: Tilting her head, Siki glanced toward the direction that the boy pointed at and started walking there, awkwardly wondering if her should thank the boy or not for his rather peculiar behavior. "Thanks?" she decided to say, rather unsure if she should have talked.
16:55 <RefMankey>: More documents passed from the office to the "science department," as one of these door-keepers finally managed some opening time. The receptionist that greeted Saiki made sure to look up and greet Saiki with a smile: "Hello! Need to see Professor Elm? He has a timeslot opening in five minutes."
16:59 <cynda1>: The nice receptionist grabbed the girl's attention away from the strange boy, causing her to smile at the woman's friendly behavior. "Hi, I'm Hyoshi Saiki," she introduced. "Yes, I'd like to see Professor Elm if that's alright." Accepting the five minute wait, the nineteen year old nodded and walked away from the receptionist.
17:00 <cynda1>: She tried to generally stay out of the way of any busy workers while she waited for her appointment.
17:03 <RefMankey>: "Hyoshi?" he aske. There was a pause as the man reached behind him, grabbing a pen and placing it near a clipboard. "Sounds good; just sign this." A clipboard held several names and times - some of these crossed out
17:04 <cynda1>: Saiki nodded, grabbed the pen and pad and signed the document before handing it back to the man. "Thank you." she said, still trying to stay out of the way of any busy workers that may walk by.
17:07 <RefMankey>: *DING.* The door to the Trainer's room slid open. Out came a face Hyoshi's receptionist recognized instantly:
17:07 <RefMankey>:
17:10 <RefMankey>: "Professor Elm?" It was, indeed, the man of Bark Town legend, one that even drew the boy's eyes. "Yes. What's the scedule looking like?" The receptionist adjusted imaginary glasses before stumbling; "oh, right." Contacts. "We have....I think, a Trainer here. Ms. Hyoshi?"
17:11 <RefMankey>: Professor Elm's hands were free, or at least relatively; "The Growth of Species" was the lone heavy book at his side.
17:11 <cynda1>: Saiki flinched as the door slid open revealing a rather frazzled looking middle aged man who didn't seem very organized. Tilting her head a bit in bewilderment. This was the man who was giving her her first Pokemon? "Um, yes." She said feeling a little bad for not knowing who he was before straightening herself out. "That's me."
17:13 <cynda1>: She watched the Professor like a hawk, wondering what it was he was going to do to complete this job. Who would be her first Pokemon? Despite seeing many Trainers pass through Goldenrod city, she never really understood the process, and she was really curious about how it worked.
17:14 <cynda1>: "I'm here for my first Pokemon." she clarified, though something about Elm made her feel like he already knew that.
17:17 <RefMankey>: With a tilt of the head, Professor Elm looked down at the Trainer-to-be. He took a glance at the clipboard and...pumped his fist. "That's it? Alright then!"
17:19 <cynda1>: The Professor's reaction seemed to catch the Trainer-to-be off guard with her misunderstanding of why the man was so excited. Then again, she didn't really get a good look at the list of who signed up, if anyone else did.
17:20 <RefMankey>: He opened his mouth briefly, but Saiki about answered that brief, clarifying question. All sorts of people entered this place. Without hesitation, Elm opened the door to the "Trainer" section. From there, at least one or two people scientists wandered the halls. One carried a gigantic rock - some called that creature a Geodude. The Professor moved somewhat
17:21 <RefMankey>: quickly, dodging his employees with astounding success. Briefly, wishing to ask something of this wannabe trainer, Professor Elm asked Hyoshi: "So." A heavy question. "Why be a Trainer?"
17:22 <RefMankey>: The room in question was not too far from the desk; just a few portraits and a map away, a room marked "beginning trainers" lied, and rather empty at that.
17:24 <cynda1>: "Why?" the young woman echoed, pondering the question. To be certain, she didn't really know the answer to that question other than it wasn't too complicated. It didn't require anything more than the traditional Pokemon catching or battling, but her answer? "I've just always wanted to be one." That was true, too.
17:25 <cynda1>: The woman looked at the sign they were coming upon and smiled as a vision of her dreams finally seemed to be realized. This wasn't quite how she envisioned the lab to be, but it surely didn't mean she disliked it. She actually liked it more than she thought she would, which was already a lot.
17:35 <RefMankey>: Professor Elm's expression blanked. Professor Elm stretched his neck, revealing the healed remnants of what must've been an enormous scar. "It's not an easy job," he said, though in his restrospect he didn't need to say that. An explanation would be better: "People come in all the time wanting to become a Trainer, but lack the guts or foresight to handle
17:37 <RefMankey>: themselves." He shook his head. "It's a life contract. I don't mean to discourage you or anything, Hyoshi, but...are you sure about this?"
17:38 <cynda1>: The young adult was more than aware of the risks that came with becoming a Trainer. "I realize the difficulties, but I believe I can handle them." she reassured the Professor. "I've been wanting to do this for a long time, but haven't felt like I was ready until now." At least, that's what people told her. "I'm sure that whatever is thrown at me I can handle.
17:39 <cynda1>: Of course, that was a lot of confidence coming out of the mouth of someone who didn't even know the name of the Professor until she talked to a very anti-social boy.
17:50 <RefMankey>: Until now. "I guess we'll see in due time." Despite her strong spirit Professor Elm had more than a few questions for Hyoshi. Some he'd keep in his coat, but a big one flopped out: "Have you handled a Pokemon before?"
17:53 <cynda1>: "I've pet some." she said, admitting that her history with Pokemon was very limited. "I've held some Pokemon that some of my friends had, and those were kind of a hit and miss." Even then, there weren't that many, and she certainly doesn't
17:53 <cynda1>: know how to handle every kind of Pokemon.
17:53 <cynda1>: (Keyboard derped.)
18:03 <RefMankey>: "Ah." Elm's expression hardly changed; he could tell at a glance Hyoshi had much to work on. "Now to take the next step." Opening that illusive door revealed an isolated room. Wide and greyish, there was exactly one light source and lines - akin to a basketball court - inscribed on the ground.
18:05 <cynda1>: Saiki didn't seem to impress the man very much. He seemed to know something about this field that she didn't, but that seemed to make perfect sense. After all, he was a Professor. He was supposed to know this stuff about Pokemon. None the less, there was nothing he could say that would get her to change her mind, or her method.
18:05 <RefMankey>: It was also very empty; a red button was on the wall, and two grey slabs occupied this "court." On one slab, a metal tackle-box of sorts. Professor Elm noted: "It's not the most appealing room, but it'll be over quickly."
18:08 <cynda1>: The woman looked over the room not the least bit deterred by its less than appealing appearance. "It looks great to me." she said, taking note that it seemed rather useful in its function. "Just take your time." she insisted, knowing that she was very lucky to have gotten an appointment with him so soon.
18:15 <RefMankey>: Somewhat halfheartedly, Professor Elm replied, "Err...thanks. Fifteen years unchanged." Sticking to his point, Professor Elm moved to that tackle-box on the slab. Whipping out a key, he gritted his teeth as he tried to maneuver the key inside correctly.
18:18 <RefMankey>: *POP* goes the box. Not before long, Elm stood up and declared: "I'm going to test your skills." He figured /what/ would be obvious, and moved onto that next point. "It's your lucky day, Ms. Hyoshi. You have quite a few to work with."
18:18 <cynda1>: Keeping her emerald eyes right on the Professor's actions, Saiki's curiosity peaked as she wondered what it was that was inside the box. Despite usually being nosy she just let the man do his job.
18:20 <RefMankey>: Pokeballs. Ten, to start out with. Each of them were marked with a name.
18:20 <cynda1>: Flinching at the popping sound, her focus so intense she didn't even expect the sound, a sense of thrill filled the young woman's gut. A test? The sound of that word caused her to feel sick. She didn't want to be tested, not after the last time.
18:21 <cynda1>: However, her expression brightened at the sight of not three, but ten pokeballs. She'd seen plenty of those, as it was hard for anyone not to. The all had names on them, giving her the impression that they were the Pokemon she could choose from.
18:26 <RefMankey>: [The Names: Magnemite, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Meowth, Oddish, Ekans, Sandshrew, Totodile, Spinarak, and B-]
18:26 <RefMankey>: Professor Elm made /sure/ to note: "If you have any questions about these Pokemon, ask away."
18:29 <cynda1>: "B-?" she asked not quite knowing what that meant. "Is that a Pokemon? I've never seen a Pokemon with that kind of name before." Not that she knew many of the other names.
18:35 <RefMankey>: "B-negative?" Elm looked confusedly at that Pokeball, whose writing became illegible after that one letter. "Want to say it's a Bellsprout - a very timid one at that. But I'm not sure myself."
18:39 <RefMankey>: He latched his hand around the ball and pocketed it. "I'll get it categorized, just in case."
18:39 <RefMankey>: *just in case, not if you'd like
18:40 <cynda1>: "Is it okay if I meet them?" Saiki asked. "I'd like to see what they are if you don't mind. I don't want to pick one I don't end up getting along with if I don't have to."
18:45 <RefMankey>: Elm lightly sighed, scratching his chin. "I guess." Elm got close to the red button - arms'-reach - before he let Saiki touch "B-." Once in position, he then said, "...alright. If it's not a vine, just stay calm and try not to anger it." With that, Elm dug around for the offending Poke Ball and held it in front of Saiki. "You've thrown one of these before?"
18:47 <cynda1>: "Nope." she admitted. "But I've seen people do it." So with that, the woman accepted the ball and tossed it in the air, hoping that it would be successful.
18:49 <RefMankey>: Elm took note of Saiki's form - she sent it high in the air and, while still landing on the bottom-side, did not open. He made just one note: "Try holding the button on the front, then throwing it."
16:25 <RefMankey>: By far the largest building among those in New Bark Town was the Town Lab. Its plaque honored its "head Professor Elm" very generously. Through glass windows, one could all sorts of scientific progresses.
